COMMON HEADACHE TYPES WE TREAT

There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to headache care.

That’s why we tailor our treatments based on the specific type of headache you’re dealing with.

Tension-Type Headaches

These can include:

  • The most common type of primary headache

  • Characterised by a dull, aching, pressure-like pain rather than throbbing or pulsating

Symptoms:

  • Pain quality: Tight, band-like, or pressing sensation (often described as “a clamp on the head”)

  • Location: Usually bilateral (both sides of the head), across the forehead, temples, or back of the head/neck

  • Intensity: Mild to moderate; not severe enough to stop daily activities

  • Associated features:

    • No nausea or vomiting (unlike migraines)

    • May have mild sensitivity to light or sound, but not both

    • Muscle tenderness around the scalp, temples, and neck

Types:

  • Episodic TTH: Less than 15 days per month

  • Chronic TTH: More than 15 days per month for >3 months

Causes & triggers:

  • Muscle tension in the scalp, neck, and shoulders

  • Stress, anxiety, or poor posture

  • •Eye strain, dehydration, or fatigue

  • Sleep disturbances

Migraines

These can include:

  • Migraine with Aura (visual disturbances, sensory changes)

  • Migraine without Aura

  • Chronic Migraine (more than 15 days/month) often accompanied by nausea, light sensitivity and throbbing pain on either side of the head

Cervicogenic Headaches

Referred pain from the neck, usually felt on one side of the head or face, triggered by specific neck movements or sustained postures

Whiplash-Associated Headaches

Post-trauma headaches resulting from car accidents or sudden neck movements, often accompanied by neck stiffness and dizziness

Postural-Induced Headaches

Caused by prolonged poor posture, particularly forward head carriage common with desk-based work

Hypnic Headaches

Rare but consistent headaches that wake individuals from sleep, these typically affect older adults and are not usually responsive to typical painkillers.

Thorough evaluation

We begin with a comprehensive consultation, including a physical, neurological, and postural assessment to:

  • Identify musculoskeletal triggers

  • Assess posture and spinal alignment both of which can significantly contribute to be headache generator

  • Rule out red flags requiring referral

Chiropractic adjustments

Spinal manipulative therapy has been shown to be particularly effective for cervicogenic, tension-type, and some migraine variants

Techniques may include:

  • Cervical spine mobilisations

  • Manual or instrument-assisted adjustments

  • Myofascial release and trigger point therapy

  • Dry Needling

  • Graston or IASTM

“A 2011 randomised controlled trial published on PubMed found that chiropractic spinal manipulation significantly reduced migraine intensity and frequency in chronic sufferers”1.

Strengthening & Postural Retraining

Once acute symptoms are under control, we introduce a bespoke exercise and training program we design specifically for YOU.

  • Strengthening deep neck flexors and postural muscles

  • Improving posture and thoracic mobility

  • Enhancing correct breathing mechanics

  • Educating on desk ergonomics movement habits

  • Stress management and sleep ergonomics education

This combination not only restores normal function but prevents recurrence!
